James Baldwin

James Baldwin (1924-1987)

Also a well-known essayist of the civil rights movement, Baldwin’s novels and short stories often draw upon his experiences growing up a poor, black, gay man in New York during the nineteen twenties and thirties.

While reading this selection from his novel Giovanni’s Room, compare the shame experienced by the narrator the morning after to that of Brick in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and how masculine gender roles are compromised and challenged during homosexual acts, leaving the characters scared of their sexuality.
